Hen adoption form

Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ)

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) including housing measures is currently in force across England, with high-risk areas and protection/surveillance zones.

While the Surge Sanctuary is outside of these avian flu lockdown zones (Nottinghamshire NG16), we cannot send chickens to homes that are in high-risk areas.

Please check that you are not in one of these zones by visiting this map.

Please be aware that the hens currently in our care have been rescued from a factory farm. While still only 18-months old, they have spent that time in terrible conditions and it is important that as a caregiver you understand the importance of nutrition and how to look after chickens with existing health issues or a greater susceptibility to problems in the future. Undertaking the care of a rescued factory hen is a huge responsibility, but you will be doing something amazing.

If you’d like to provide a home for one of the rescued chickens in our care, please fill in the form and answer a few questions to help us determine if it’ll be a good fit.

We have a responsibility to ensure, to the best of our abilities, that the hens will be going to good homes with adequate space and shelter. We would also like to get a feel for your experience of providing care to chickens, and whether you have thought carefully about costs such as food and vet bills.

Prior experience of caring for chickens is preferable, but not essential, as we can refer you to resources and groups where you can learn all you need to know.

You can also use this form if you’re unsure of something and would like to make an enquiry before applying. However, please only enquire if you are seriously considering re-homing a chicken.

Please note:

  • All hens must be collected from the sanctuary (Nottinghamshire NG16). We are unable to arrange transportation for you.

  • There is a required minimum donation of £5 per hen that will go directly to the sanctuary - none of our hens have been purchased from farms. This is standard for many sanctuaries. A link to donate will be sent to you when your application to re-home is approved.
